It is
indeed a very rare happening. When the Wall Street
Journal (WSJ) announced that he would be the
managing editor for WSJ Europe Edition even he was surprised. After getting into editing, Raju
Narisetti has reached a position, which a few
Indians ever reached.
Raju was born in
Hyderabad, in June, 26 1966. He completed his
schooling in Hyderabad He graduated in Economics
and Sociology from the Nizam College, Hyderabad.
Then, he went to the Institute of Rural
Management, Anand for his MBA. Then, Raju joined
the Times of India School of Journalism, New
Delhi, for a Post Graduate diploma in Journalism.
After that, he joined the Economic Times and had a
brief stint. He is credited to have helped launch
the weekend section of the Economic Times.
Later, Raju worked
for the Times of India in New Delhi. After that,
Raju went to the US for a master’s degree in
Journalism from the Indiana University (IU) at
Bloomington. While at IU, Raju took several
courses in international business. He reckons that
these courses helped him in understanding
companies as global entities.
He also suggests
that business journalists must not be frightened
about balance sheets and profit margins. While he
was studying in IU, he went to WSJ as an intern.
That was in 1991. After completing his course in
IU, Raju joined as a business reporter for The
Dayton Daily News in Ohio. Raju was with the
Dayton Daily for three years. There, he won two
Publisher's Awards, the Cox Newspapers' chain's
highest honors, for outstanding reporting and
writing. In 1994, he joined WSJ as a reporter.
Initially, he was
with the Pittsburgh Bureau. There, he covered
manufacturing, machine tools and tire industries.
He also wrote the Work Week column. Later, he
covered Procter & Gamble and other consumer
products companies In August 1997, he moved to New
York and covered many prominent companies in the
US. In February 1999, he moved to the desk. After
that, he held many positions in the editorial
department at the WSJ.
In April 2002, he
was promoted as the Deputy National Editor. He was
responsible for planning daily news, editing
stories and co-ordination. In December 2002, he
was promoted as the managing editor of WSJ Europe
edition at Brussels. Raju will take up the
position in February, 2003.
Raju feels that his
current position will be a big challenge, as WSJ
will be operating in the territory of Financial
Express (FE). FE is well entrenched in Europe and
WSJ is trying to expand its readership. In Europe,
Raju will be responsible for driving the WSJ
Europe edition’s coverage and its coordination
with other editions and with Dow Jones Newswires.
