| The VSNA is a
non-profit, tax-exempt, religious organization in the USA. It was founded in 1978. |
| |
| OBJECTIVES: |
| The VSNA's
mission is -- to preserve and foster Veerashaivism (Lingayatism) in the North America; and
to impart the Lingayata spiritual heritage, its universalistic, democratic values to the
posterity through the teachings of Basavanna and his contemporaries. |
| |
| ACTIVITIES: |
| The VSNA's major
activity is an annual convention which is hosted by any one of the chapters. Religious
scholars and the Veerashaiva swamijis invited for conventions give discourses on
Veerashaivism and Hinduism. Youth tours, spiritual discussions, youth and adult workshops
about religious practices, business workshops for youth, felicitation of graduates,
holding of Vachana, dance, coloring, and essay competitions related to Veerashaiva topics,
and cultural entertainment are some of other aspects of conventions. The VSNA publishes
religious education books, calendars with Vachanas and pictures of 12th century sharanas,
membership directories, and a quarterly newsletter. Achievement and service awards,
scholarships, helping in family emergencies, channeling charitable contributions, sale of
Vachana tapes, sale of video movies about the 12th century sharanas, and obtaining books
for the VSNA library are on-going activities. |
| There are 15
chapters of the VSNA. The chapter members are involved in many activities at regular
intervals. Members' main focus is to educate the young Veerashaivas of their religious
heritage by doing Istalinga pooja, reading and interpreting Vachanas, educating them about
the life and work of the 12th century devotees, explaining Hindu festivals, and discussing
the similarities and differences in Veerashaivism and other religions. |
