Botswana

During brief visit here we hope, with the aid of this page to give you a taste of Botswana country: its history, its traditions, its people and the many wonderful places to visit and explore. We hope to whet your appetite and incite your curiosity to grasp more info about this country.

Republic of Botswana is located in the centre of the Southern African region and is landlocked by Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Gaborone, the capital, is situated in the southeast of the country and features an excellent National Museum with natural history and ethnological exhibitions, but it is Botswana's national parks and game reserves that are the real attraction.

Most of Botswana lies on a plateau, the Kalahari desert covering most of the South and South West of the region. The Okavango Delta area, northwards in the Kalahari Desert, is home to over 300 exotic species and a variety of fauna. It is extremely beautiful, composed of vast grass flats, low tree-covered ridges and lagoons.

The Moremi Wildlife Reserve in southern Africa, covering 1812 sq km (700 sq miles) in the northeast corner of the Okavango Delta, is spectacular. Small boats travel the delta through lagoons abundant with birdlife. Most lodges and safari camps have restaurants and licensed bars

Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name upon independence in 1966. The economy, closely tied to South Africa's, is dominated by cattle raising and mining.
