Ram
Gidoomal arrived in UK in 1967 as a refugee from Kenya
and with his sheer determination and hard work became
owner of six shops within six months of arrival. Ram
studied at Imperial College, London where he earned an
honours degree in physics. He entered business,
working first at Lloyds Bank International and later
with a multinational company in Geneva. He ascended rapidly to senior positions and managed a large
workforce and considerable budgets.
Ram
Gidoomal is the only ethnic minority candidate to have
been chosen as a candidate in the 2004 elections. In
1992 he stepped down as vice-chairman of a company worth
some £130m and employing 7,000 people, announcing that
he would be concentrating his time and wealth on
charitable work and community business projects.
Ram is a successful
entrepreneur and businessman, and author of several
books including "The
British and how to deal with them", "The
U.K. Maharajahs" and "How
would Jesus vote?" He
is also active in community and environmental concerns,
chairing the London Community Foundation and the London
Sustainability Exchange, and as a non-executive board
member of English Partnerships. Amongst many other
interests, Ram also has had family links with Southall,
and founded and chairs South Asian Concern, which
enables Asian and other Christians to be more effective
in leadership amongst the Asian communities.
Ram is on
the European Advisory Board of NASDAQ quoted Syntel
Inc., a board member of a local NHS Trust, the Covent
Garden Market Authority, English Partnerships and London
First Centre and the Companions of the Chartered
Management Institute. He is chairman of the London
Community Foundation and serves on the council of The
