Sukhi Turner formerly known as Sukhinder Kaur Gill is
the Mayor of Dunedin, New Zealand. She is a political
science post graduate from Ludhiana
in Punjab and now also is an active participant in
welfare programs in Punjab. She is working with
NGOs and the government to help set up basic
infrastructure in her village near Moga in Punjab
including a sanitation system and providing drinking
water.
Sukhi
Turner had migrated to New Zealand way back in 1973. She
is married to former New Zealand cricket captain Glenn
Turner and won her third term as mayor in 2001.

Turner's political career started with her being as a
Councillor of Dunedin in 1992. Later
she created history by becoming the youngest and the
first woman Mayor in 1995 by defeating the incumbent
Mayor. She was re-elected in 1998 and won for the third
time in 2001. She represents the Green Party of Aoteaora,
New Zealand. She is one of the few Indians who has risen
to such heights in the politics of New Zealand.
Sukhi
Turner, who has run small businesses along with Indian
cookery classes in Dunedin, also represents the
metropolitan sector group at The Local Government New
Zealand Council. She is also a member of various
community organizations and the Green Party of Aoteaora,
the native Maori name for New Zealand
She dares
to challenge things which she feels are not good for the
people as a whole. In an instance she has opposed the
basic idea behind the Asia Pacific Economic
Co-operation. She has gone to the extent of calling APEC
a scam and challenged the notion that bigger is always
better, arguing that local economies are special and
local governments should invest in them. |
