Govt considering dual citizenship for Gulf NRIs

Minister of State for Law and Justice P.C Thomas said, Central Government is looking into the proposal of granting dual citizenship to Non Resident Indians in Gulf region.

Government has ealier granted permission to NRIs and PIOs living in United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Finland, Ireland, Netherland and Italy to hold dual citizenship. However they would not have the privilege of voting rights and will not be allowed to hold constitutional offices or jobs in all the three defence services.

Though there was many representation of including Gulf NRIs in the list. However now the government is looking into various issues in this regard.

Kerala Non Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) Minister M.M Hassan said the government would seriously consider issuing identity cards to the Malayalees working abroad and in other states of the country.
