US imposes sanctions on Indian firm
On February 4, 2003, the US State Department has imposed sanctions on NEC Engineers Private Limited and its President, Hans Raj Shiv. These sanctions were imposed under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991. These sanctions will be in effect for a year.
According to the state department, NEC operated in the Middle East and Eurasia. The state department states that these penalties were imposed on these entities for knowingly and materially contributing to Iraq’s chemical/biological weapons (CBW) program.
Based on these sanctions, the U.S. Government will not purchase anything from NEC and Hans Raj Shiv. The U.S. State department states that it has informed the Indian government about these sanctions. These penalties do not extend to India or the Indian government. |
