Guyana's president Bharat Jagdeo visits Indian village
Guyana's President Bharat Jagdeo visited his ancestral village in India, his grandfather lived there for over 90 years ago before migrating to Guyana.
Authorities built a road to the village of Thakurain Ka Purwa and wired it with electricity within days of the visit by Jagdeo, who is in India to discuss bilateral trade and business ties. The two dozen families who live in the village also planned to give the president a small plot of land, which had once belonged to his grandfather, Ram Jiyawan.
Out of a population of 7 lakh and odd nearly half of the population are descendants of Indian origin mainly sugarcane farmers, who migrated to South America under the British rule as they were expertise in growing sugarcane crop. |
