Before entering Japan, foreigners must apply for a visa at any of the Japan’s embassies or consulates. Foreigners must have a valid passport.
After reaching Japan, the immigration authorities will stamp a landing permission on a foreigner’s passport. This landing permission serves as the legal basis for a foreigner’s stay in Japan. To issue the landing permission, the immigration authorities will check
- Whether the applicant has a valid passport
- Whether the applicant has a valid visa
- The purpose of entering Japan
- The scheduled period of stay and other aspects
Landing permission also states the status of residence of the foreigner (immigration status). This status determines the activities that the foreigner can do while he is in Japan. It also specifies the terms and conditions of the foreigner’s residence status. As soon as the immigration officer stamps the landing permission, single entry visa becomes invalid.
Re-entry permits
For those foreigners who are in Japan and have acquired a status of residence for a long -term stay, and wish to leave the country temporarily, then, they must obtain a re-entry permit before leaving Japan. This permit enables them to re-enter Japan without a new visa. However, they must re-enter Japan within the valid period of the re-entry permit. Foreigners can apply for such re-entry permits at their nearest immigration authority under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice. When this re-entry permit is granted, it is stamped on the foreigner’s passport. These re-entry permits can be single and multiple re-entry permits. These re-entry permits are issued only in Japan. However, in case if the foreigner wishes to enter the period of validity of this permit, he can apply at an Embassy or a consulate.
